H. Pylori

What is H. Pylori?

Typically a childhood infection that occurs when Helicobacter pylori infects the stomach. It is a common cause of peptic ulcers, and is present in 50% of the human population. As the majority of people who do have H. Pylori don’t know they have it because they never get sick from it.

Signs and Symptoms

  • Weight loss
  • Frequent Burping
  • Ache or pain in the abdomen
  • Vomiting
  • Nausea
  • Bloating

Causes

The H. Pylori bacteria can be passed via contaminated food or water. It can also be passed through direct contact with feces, vomit or saliva.

Living conditions are a risk factor for contracting H. Pylori, such conditions are crowded living situations, living in a developing country, living with someone who has an H. Pylori infection, living in a place that doesn’t have a reliable supply of hot water.

Complications

The H. Pylori bacteria is a risk factor in certain types of stomach cancer. Inflammation of the stomach lining and ulcers are other complications of H. Pylori.

Treatment

An acid suppression drug is given to assist in the healing of the stomach lining. H. Pylori is treated with two different antibiotics at once. This is to prevent the bacteria from developing a resistance to one specific antibiotic.
