Secondhand Smoke Linked to Sleep Problems in Children
Both adults and adolescents who smoke have reported difficulties sleeping, and young children exposed to tobacco smoke have poorer sleep quality. Researchers found that exposure to secondhand smoke can be associated with sleep problems among children with asthma, including difficulties falling asleep, more sleep-disordered breathing and increased daytime sleepiness. Sleep efficiency has been shown to improve with effective asthma treatment, but study authors feel that the reduction or elimination of secondhand smoke can have significant impact on physical and emotional health and school performance among the pediatric population.

Low strength H1N1 Flumist vaccines recalled
There is a CDC news report regarding the recall of some of MedImmune's H1N1 FluMist vaccine. This is a potency ( shelf-life ) issue, not a safety issue, and anyone that was vaccinated with one of these lot numbers does not have to be re-vaccinated. They are also totally safe.
Of the 13 lots affected, Michigan providers received seven.

800,000 low strength vaccines recalled
ATLANTA — Hundreds of thousands of swine flu shots for children manufactured by French drug company Sanofi Pasteur have been recalled because tests indicate the vaccine doses lost some strength, government health officials said Tuesday.
The recall is for about 800,000 pre-filled syringes intended for young children, ages 6 months to nearly 3 years.
The shots were distributed across the country last month and most have already been used, according to the federal government's Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Doctors were notified of the voluntary recall on Tuesday.
Dr. Anne Schuchat, a CDC flu expert, stressed that parents don't need to do anything or to worry. The vaccine is still safe, she said. The issue is the vaccine's strength.
"No action (is) necessary by a parent of a child who received this vaccine," said Tom Skinner, a spokesman for the CDC. "(The) only thing they need to do is make sure their child gets two doses if they're in the 6 month - 35 month age group, which is the group impacted by the recall."
Tests done before the shots were shipped showed that the vaccines were strong enough. But tests done weeks later indicated the strength had fallen slightly below required levels. Why the potency dropped isn't clear.

What is swine flu?
Swine Influenza (swine flu) is a respiratory disease of pigs caused by type A influenza viruses that causes regular outbreaks in pigs. People do not normally get swine flu, but human infections can and do happen. Swine flu viruses have been reported to spread from person-to-person, but in the past, this transmission was limited and not sustained beyond three people.
Are there human infections with swine flu in the U.S.?
In late March and early April 2009, cases of human infection with swine influenza A (H1N1) viruses were first reported in Southern California and near San Antonio, Texas. Other U.S. states have reported cases of swine flu infection in humans and cases have been reported internationally as well. An updated case count of confirmed swine flu infections in the United States is kept here . CDC and local and state health agencies are working together to investigate this situation.

Immunizations & Vaccines
Immunizations work by getting your immune system to provide protection before you get sick. Before you get sick from a certain disease, you are given a vaccine that contains a tiny bit of bacteria or virus which you want to protect your body from. Example, to protect from the measles you get a vaccine which will have a small piece of the measles virus. This will be enough to make your body immune to future attacks of the measles but no enough to make you sick. Your body will then produce antibodies when it gets the vaccine and will do the same thing when it gets attacked by the measles in the future.
All children aged 6 to 59 months should receive influenza vaccine every year. So should children of any age with conditions like asthma, diabetes, HIV, hearing problems, sickle cell and other serious conditions. Ask your doctor if your child needs a flu shot. Click here for more info

Car Seats for Infants & Todlers
INFANTS - An infant (up to one year of age) should travel in a federally approved infant safety seat that must always face the rear of the car. Facing rearward protects the infant's fragile head and neck if a crash does occur. The seat should also be semi-reclined so the baby's head does not flop forward. Click here for more info
TODDLERS - Convertible seats are for children up to about 4 years of age. This seat is used facing the rear while the baby is under one year old. It may be turned around to face the front when the baby is about one year old. When children outgrow a convertible seat, they should travel in a booster seat. A booster seat makes the safety belt fit better and more comfortably.

Use of a room fan can decrease the risk of S.I.D.S.
In a recent study, it was found that the use of a fan in an infant's room can decrease the risk of SIDS ( sudden infant death syndrome ) by more than 50%. This significant benefit is mainly due to the increased circulation of the air in the room allowing the infant to breath fresh air and preventing the baby from breathing exhaled carbon dioxide. This beneficial effect was seen also for infants who slept in warmer temperatures or who slept in a prone (face down) position. ( It is not recommended for babies to sleep face down until they are at least 9 months old. )
Vitamin D recommendation doubled by AAP
The American Academy of Pediatrics has recommended that all children should take at least 400 IU of vitamin D daily. The doubling of intake of vitamin D was suggested in the effort to prevent Rickets in infants and also for the potential long term benefits of the vitamin on the health of babies. The amount of 400 IU is already found in chewable vitamins. It was found that this amount can prevent Rickets and could also treat Rickets as well. There is also evidence that vitamin D is beneficial in the prevention of autoimmune diseases, infections, some forms of cancer, osteoporosis and type 2 diabetes.
