Eczema

What is Eczema

An inflammation of the skin that is often itchy. Any area of the skin may be affected that is chronic and can sometimes be accompanied by asthma or hay fever. The cause of Eczema is unknown, but it is thought that it may be a result of a combination of inherited tendencies for sensitive skin or malfunction of an individual’s immune system.

Signs and Symptoms

Common places to find patches of Eczema are: hands, feet, elbow, wrists, neck, upper chest, ankles, and behind the knees.

The condition typically begins during early childhood.
  • Red to brownish-gray colored patches.
  • Itching, which intensity may vary. Often intensity is highest at night.
  • Bumps that are small and raised, and possibly will leak fluid and crust over when scratched.
  • Cracked, thickened, or scaly skin.
  • Sensitive or raw skin from scratching.

Conditions that may worsen the symptoms of Eczema

  • Stress
  • Long, hot baths or showers
  • Dry Skin, also low humidity that may lead to dry skin
  • Sweating
  • Rapid changes in temperature
  • Cigarette smoke
  • Certain foods (eggs, milk, soy)

Complications

  • Eye complications
  • Skin Infections
  • Neurodermatitis

Flaxseed oil has been shown to help improve and boost an individual's immune system. Since on possible cause of eczema is a malfunctioning immune system, flaxseed oil is worth adding to an eczema sufferers diet as it will provide some relief from the condition as well as boosting the over all health of the individual.

Simple personal care measures can be taken to avoid these flare-ups. Such measures are avoiding certain soaps or other known irritants, as well as applying prescribed cream or ointments.
