When to see your doctor

If you experience any discharge from either the vagnina or penis, or if you have pain during urination, see a doctor. Additionally if you have a sexual partner who reveals that she/he has chlamydia, then seek treatment even if you do not present symptoms.

Before your appointment, make a list detailing when your symptoms began , what medications you take regularly, if anything makes your symptoms better or worse. Also, be sure to ask about getting tested for other STDs as well and if your sexual partners should be tested as well.

Tests and Diagnosis

If you’re sexually active, be sure to get yearly screening for STDs. If you frequently change partners, with the use of protection or not, it is recommended that you be screened every few months.

Risk Factors

  • Multiple sex partners in the last year
  • History of prior STD infection(s)
  • Under the age of 24
  • Infrequent or no condom use

Treatment

Antibiotics are used to treat chlamydia. These treatments can come in one-dose, or daily medication that is taken a couple of times a day for a five to ten day period. During the time of treatment you'll need to abstain from sex, as well as ensuring that your partner is being treated during this time as well even if they do not exhibit symptoms. If they are not treated, then the infection may be passed back and forth between the partners, and treatment will have to begin again.
