What is Hypothyroidism?

Hypothyroidism (underactive thyroid) is a condition in which your thyroid gland doesn’t produce enough of certain hormones. Women sixty years old and older are more likely to have hypothyroidism. This underactive thyroid hormone plays an important role in your body maintaining the proper functioning of the circulatory, metabolic and nervous systems. Hypothyroidism can cause increase in body weight, infertility, joint pain, tiredness, loss of hair, poor brain function, raise your cholesterol and heart disease.

What causes Hypothyroidism?

  • Hashimoto's thyroiditis
  • Surgery to remove Thyroid gland
  • Radiation therapy for cancer
  • Certain drugs: lithium
  • Iodine deficiency
  • Pitunitary disorder

What are the symptoms?

  • Tiredness and weakness
  • Cold and Intolerance
  • Constipation
  • Memory Loss
  • Heavy or Irregular Menstrual periods
  • Weight Gain
  • Hoarseness
  • Puffy face
  • Pain and stiffness of joints
  • Loss of hair or thinning of hair
  • Depression
  • Elevated blood cholesterol levels

How is Hypothyroidism diagnosed?

  • High TSH (Thyroid Stimulating Hormone) level
  • Low Free T4
  • High Anti‐Thyroid antibodies

How is Hypothyroidism treated?

  • Thyroid hormone pills (Synthroid) taken daily
